Mobile Traction Engine & Road Steam Engine Decontamination
Heritage Preservation Standards. Zero Moisture Risk. Brought Directly to Your Rally Yard or Workshop.
Deep cleaning operational traction engines, steam wagons, and showman’s road locomotives requires extreme care to protect irreplaceable historic metalwork, brass fittings, and hand-painted pinstriping. Traditional pressure washing forces water into unsealed bearings, belly tanks, and boiler lagging—fueling hidden rust—while harsh chemical solvents risk stripping original varnish and decorative paintwork. Vortex Ice Labs operates a 100% mobile cryogenic cleaning service, bringing high-precision dry ice blasting directly to your shed, rally prep yard, or workshop to remove heavy cylinder oil, coal soot, road tar, and caked-on grease using zero liquid water and zero abrasive media.
Maintaining operational traction engines and road steam assets requires keeping motion gear, boiler jackets, and under-chassis framework spotless for rally presentation, mechanical overhauls, or annual boiler inspections. However, scrubbing away decades of burnt-on cylinder oil, coal dust, and stubborn road grime is tedious work that risks scratching polished steel, damaging copper pipework, or trapping moisture in hard-to-reach pockets.

Vortex Ice Labs delivers a completely mobile, 100% dry cryogenic cleaning process. Utilizing food-grade dry ice pellets at -78.5°C, our micro-blast thermally shocks and instantly fractures caked-on grease, soot, and road tar directly off bare metal, cast iron, copper, brass, and cured historic liveries. Because our mobile rig is entirely self-sustained—powered by onboard high-output diesel air compression and independent power—we bring the complete setup straight to your location with zero need for site power or water connections.
The Dry Ice Advantage
Precision Cleaning for Motion Gear, Wheels & Axle Boxes
100% Water-Free & Zero Trap-Rust Risk
Gentle on Historic Livery, Brasswork & Copper Fittings
Road steam engines feature intricate valve gear, open gearing, belly tanks, and heavy wheel spading where grease and road dirt accumulate fast. Dry ice blasting safely cleans deep into motion assemblies, drive gears, and axle boxes without introducing abrasive wear or surface erosion, perfectly preparing components for non-destructive testing (NDT), ultrasonic thickness testing, or pre-boiler inspection checks.
Pressure washing or steam cleaning forces water under boiler cladding, into unsealed bearings, and into internal chassis box sections—trapping moisture that accelerates internal corrosion. Because dry ice sublimates instantly into carbon dioxide gas on impact, our process is completely moisture-free. There is zero risk of trapped water, no risk of contaminating oil reservoirs, and zero liquid waste left on your yard floor.
Unlike sandblasting, wire wheels, or aggressive chemical strippers, dry ice pellets are non-abrasive. We safely remove heavy oil and coal soot buildup directly off polished brass fittings, copper lubricator lines, riveted steel plates, and hand-painted or varnished liveries without dulling metalwork, scratching surfaces, or lifting original historic paint.
